Lord Vishnu traveled downwards and lord Brahma upwards but both were not able to find out neither the beginning nor the end point of the Jyotirlinga. Lord Brahma lied to them that he had been able to discover the starting point and present the flower of Ketki as the witness and Lord Vishnu told the truth and accepted his defeat. Lord Shiva appeared as the second pillar of light and cut down one of the four heads of Brahma and cursed him that he would not be worshiped anywhere in the world except one place in Pushkar, Rajasthan.

Shiva gave boon to Vishnu that he would be worshiped in the entire world in everything till eternity.

According to Shiv Mahapuran, Lord Shiva emerged  on the fourteenth night  of the Krishna Paksha Of Phalgun month in the form of an endless pillar of light that was pervading in the whole universe to establish himself in the form of Jyotirlinga (the formless regulator of the universe).
