Margashirsha Amavasya Vrat and Pujan Vidhi

As we have already informed you that Performing Tarpan for the departed souls holds high significance on this very Amavasya. In this context, a person who observes fast and worships forefathers, gets their blessings.

  • Wake up early in the morning, take a bath in a holy river or pond and offer water to the Sun.
  • After taking a bath, put sesame in a flowing stream of water and recite the Path of Gayatri Mantra.
  • Then, venerate Lord Vishnu or Lord Shiva.
  • Perform Tarpan for the peace of ancestors and wish for their Moksha at the banks of the river or a Ghat.
  • One who observes this fast should not consume water on the same day. Offer food and clothes to the needy and Brahmins as per your financial ability after the worship.

Significance of Margashirsha Amavasya

Amavasya Tithi falling in every month is considered to be highly auspicious for performing Tarpan, Shraddha for the peace of departed souls. It is believed that they must be pleased with those who worship and observe fast for them on the day of Amavasya but one who observes fast on Margashirsha Amavasya gets rid of all Doshas in Kundali too.

In this pretext, must keep in mind to take a bath in Ganga. However, those who are unable to take a bath in the same i.e. Ganga, are advised to put some drops of Gangaajal in water at home and take a bath. It is believed about this day that the year began on the Pratham Tithi (first date) during Margashirsha month in Satyuga by the deities. 

As per Vishnu Purana, the fast of Margashirsha Amavasya gives peace and satisfaction to the departed souls. Along with this, the fast also satisfies Brahma, Indra, Surya, Agni, birds, animals and all ghosts through the worship performed by a person. One who wishes to be blessed with a son, must observe this fast with due rituals and perform worship. In addition to this, those who do not have Yoga to be blessed with a son in their Kundali are  advised to observe the same fast. By doing so, one gets blessed with the same.

The Rituals of Margashirsha Amavasya are Exactly Similar to Lakshmi Pujan on Diwali

We have already told you that this Amavasya falls in Margashirsha month. In this pretext,  this Amavasya is considered equivalent to Kartik Amavasya. The way we celebrate Diwali by performing Lakshmi Puja on Amavasya in Kartik month, similarly, worshipping Maa Lakshmi is considered highly auspicious on this very day too. 

Things to be Kept in Mind on this Amavasya

  • Avoid going to an isolated place at the night of Amavasya. Specially, one should not go towards cremation grounds or places where the dead bodies are kept. It is believed that the ghosts, vampires remain more active at the night of Amavasya.
  • In addition to this if you have a habit to sleep for long then, wake up early in the morning as it is considered to be fruitful. Take a bath early in the morning and offer water to the Sun.
  • Avoid falling in argument with anyone on this very day.  It is said that if you quarrel or fight in your house, your forefathers and Ishta Devta get upset and the peace vanishes.
  • Avoid eating non vegetarian food on the day of Amavasya. Avoid all kinds of intoxications on this very day.
  • It is said that intimacy should also be avoided on this very day. There is a mention in Garuda Purana that those couples who meet with intimacy, the child who is born remains surrounded with troubles.

Perform Satyanarayana Puja on Margashirsha  Amavasya 

We worship and observe fast on Margashirsha Amavasya for the peace of forefathers and attaining their blessings. Along with this, venerating Bhagwan Satyanarayana holds high significance on this very day. The idols/photos of Maa Lakshmi and Satyanarayan are placed at the place of worship on the same day. Then, they are venerated with due rituals and Halva is offered as Bhog. It is believed that after reciting the Path of Satyanarayan,  Prasad is distributed among others and thus, the worship is completed.
