As per mythological stories, in ancient times, there was a state where both people and animals didn’t consume rice on Ekadashi day. No one sold food on this day. Once upon a time, to test the king of the land, Lord Vishnu took the form of a beautiful woman and sat on the roadside. The king was very impressed & fascinated by the beauty of the women and asked her to visit his palace as the queen.

The woman accepted the king’s request, but put a condition for marriage – to hand over the authority of the kingdom to her, whatever she says need to be accepted, and things that she prepares need to be eaten there itself. The king accepted all the conditions of the women. Next day, on the Ekadashi, she ordered the sale of grains across the markets.
