Significance of Paush Purnima

The Magha month commences after the end of the Paush month. The tradition of taking a bath in the month of Magha starts from the day of Paush Purnima.  Therefore, the day of Paush Purnima is considered to be important for those who pray for the attainment of salvation (Moksha). There is a belief among people that whosoever takes a bath early morning and worships with due rituals on this day, attains salvation. Besides this, each day of Magha month is considered to be fruitful and auspicious. Therefore, starting any new work from this very is considered to be highly beneficial.       

People perform donations as per their financial ability on this day. In addition to this, it is said that Paush month is the month of Surya Dev and Purnima is the Tithi when the Moon shines completely. Thus, the union of the Sun and the Moon helps to fulfil all the desires of one’s life and eradicates all the hindrances. 

Paush Purnima Vrat & Pujan Vidhi 

Several people perform worship and observe fast on Paush Purnima and both are considered to be fruitful and beneficial. Along with this, the tradition of worshipping Lord Sun has been followed on this day. Now, let us know about Paush Purnima Vrat and associated Pujan Vidhi.    

  • Wake up early in the morning and take an oath to fast on the day of Paush Purnima.  
  • After this, take a bath in a holy river or Kund and offer prayers to Varun Devta. 
  • Further, offer water to the Sun while reciting Surya Mantra. 
  • Now, follow the tradition of venerating Lord Madhusudan and offer Naivedya to him in worship. 
  • Furthermore, serve food to a needy or a Brahmin and give donation as per your financial capacity.
  • One can also donate sesame, jaggery, blanket and woollen clothes on the same day.

Significance of Venerating Maa Lakshmi on Purnima

It is believed that Maa Lakshmi descends on earth in the Purnima night and blesses her devotees with peace, prosperity and wealth. In this context, one can get the blessings of Maa Lakshmi by worshipping her on this day.    

  • People light a lamp/Diya before the idols of Lord Ganesha, Devraj Indra and Maa Lakshmi in the worship of this day.
  • It is believed that Maa Laksmi is attracted by aromatic items. In this pretext, one can offer lotus flowers and rose perfume to her. 
  • Light fragrant incense sticks. 
  • Offer Kheer to Maa Lakshmi as Prasad and eat it after the worship.

Offer water to the Moon, the brother of Devi Lakshmi, and recite the following Mantra –

Apply mustard oil on your body and take a bath by adding some perfume in water. 

  • Pour pure ghee on the idol of Laddu Gopal. 
  • Recite the Mantras of Shri Hari Vishnu, Devraj and Jupiter.
