Mythological Legends Associated with Mahashivratri

Usually there are many legends associated with Mahashivratri which have been mentioned in the Garud Puran. One of them states that once Nishad Raj went out on a hunting spree with his dog. He wandered for several miles but could not lay his hands on any kill. After numerous failed attempts, he decided to give up out of hunger and thirst and reached near a pond. Upon reaching that particular place, he witnessed the presence of a Shivlinga under a Bilva tree. He extended his hands to pluck some leaves out of the tree, but some of them fell on the Shivling. Next, when he tried to clean his legs with the pond water, then some of it got sprinkled on the Shivling too. In the circle of events happening one after another, some of his arrows fell down on the ground. He got down on his knees and bowed front of the Shivling to collect them back. This is how he completed the Maha Shivaratri rituals without even acknowledging that he was commemorating them. This is the reason why disciples of Lord Shiva stood on the way of Yamraj when le landed on earth to take away the life of Nishad Raj.

Given the circumstances you can wonder about the results which can come into the forefront upon the completion of Mahashivatri rites and rituals. Nishad Raj commemorated them unknowingly. Imagine the wonders they can do when you fulfill them with utmost devotion and sincerity.
