Sawan Somwar Vrat Folklore

According to the legend of Sawan Somvar Vrat described in the scriptures, in ancient times a moneylender lived in a city. He had no shortage of wealth, but still he was unhappy because he had no children. To have a child, the moneylender used to regularly observe Somvar Vrat. He used to worship Lord Shiva and Mother Parvati with a true heart.

One day Mother Parvati asked Lord Shiva to fulfill the wish of that moneylender. Then Lord Shiva said, in this world a man gets the results according to his deeds, whatever is written in his fate, he gets that. But even after this, Parvati ji did not agree and she again requested Lord Shiva to fulfill the wish of that moneylender. On the mother’s request, Lord Shiva blessed the moneylender with a son, but he also said that this child would have a short life and would live only for 12 years.

On one hand, the moneylender was very happy after receiving the blessings from Lord Shiva, but on the other hand, he was also saddened to know that his son was 12 years old. But, even then he continued worshipping Lord Shiva as before. After some time the moneylender was blessed with a beautiful daughter. When the boy turned eleven, the moneylender sent him to Kashi with his maternal uncle for studies. The moneylender gave a lot of money to his son’s maternal uncle and said that you all should go to Kashi while performing yagya and feeding the Brahmins on the way.

Before reaching Kashi, both of them reached a kingdom where the Swayamvara for the marriage of the daughter of the king of the city was taking place. But the man to whom the girl was going to marry was blind in one eye. In such a situation, the prince’s father’s eyes fell on the moneylender’s son and he thought why not make the moneylender’s son the groom and marry him to the princess. After the marriage, I will give money to the groom and ask him to leave and will bring the girl back to my home. The prince’s father made the moneylender’s son agree to this.

But the moneylender’s son was very honest and before leaving after the marriage, he wrote on the princess’s scarf that you are married to me. But now the prince with whom you are being sent is blind in one eye. When the princess read this, she refused to go with the prince. By then the uncle and nephew had left from there and went to Kashi and performed the Yagya.

When the boy turned 12 years old, a special Yagya was organised on this occasion. But the boy gave up his life that very day. Seeing his dead nephew, the uncle started crying and at that time Mother Parvati and Lord Shiva were passing by. Mother Parvati said to Lord Shiva, “Lord, I am unable to bear the sound of that person’s crying, please relieve this person’s suffering.

Then Lord Shiva told Mother Parvati that this person is mourning the death of the moneylender’s son and his lifespan has ended. But Mother Parvati did not agree to this and said that you will have to increase the age of this child. Otherwise his parents will give up their lives due to the grief of their son. Lord Shiva listened to Mother Parvati and gave life to the boy, after which the boy completed his education and went back to his parents.

At the same time, the moneylender and his wife had decided that if their son did not return alive, they would both give up their lives. But, when they heard the news of their son’s return, there was no limit to their happiness. Lord Shiva appeared in the moneylender’s dream and said, “Shreshthi, I am pleased with your fasting on Mondays and listening to the fast story and have blessed your son with a long life.” It is said that the person who observes the Sawan Somwar Vrat with a true heart or listens to the story, all sorrows go away from his life and all wishes are fulfilled.
