Story Of Saphala Ekadashi

As per the legend, in ancient times a king named Mahishmat ruled in the city of Champavati. The king was considered very pious, just, and a pure devotee of Lord Vishnu. He had four sons, out of which the eldest son Lumbhak was considered sinful and unrighteous. Lumbhak in his life has committed various immoral acts like theft, gambling, murder, and suffering to others. The king was saddened by his misdeeds and expelled him from the kingdom.

Lumbhak started living in the forest after getting expelled from the kingdom. He used to steal from the people of the town during the daytime for food and slept under a Peepal tree at night. He didn’t realize that the tree was dedicated to Lord Vishnu. One day the Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of the Pausha month arrived, which came to be known as Saphala Ekadashi. That day Lumbhak became distressed due to extreme cold and hunger & thirst. Coincidentally, he spent the entire day without food & water and thus fasted unknowingly. During the night time, when he was sleeping under the tree, he meditated taking the name of Lord Vishnu, and sought forgiveness for his sins.

The next day, as he woke up, he saw that beautiful fruits had fallen on him with the grace of Lord Vishnu. He offered those fruits to the lord and bowed down to him with respect & honor. Lord Vishnu was highly pleased with Lumbhak’s devotion and appeared before him. He informed Lumbhak that by fasting and worship on the day of Saphala Ekadashi, all his sins had washed away and he had become a pure soul. With the grace of Lord Vishnu, Lumbhak atoned for all his sins and returned to his father’s kingdom. After that, King Mahishmat pardoned him with justice & righteousness and dedicated his life towards the devotion of Lord Vishnu.
