This day holds a special place in Hinduism. The following are the religious rites and fasts observed on Phalguna Amavasya:

  • Early in the morning on Phalguna Amavasya, take a bath in a river. You can also just add a few drops of Ganges water in your bucket of water before bathing and bathe with that water. Offerings must be made to the Sun after bathing.
  • Taking bath in rivers has special significance on Phalguna Amavasya as it is believed Gods and Goddess appear in rivers on this Day, specially the Ganga.
  • Provide food for the cows like grains, and fodder and clothing, til, Amla (Gooseberry), blankets, bedding to the poor. 
  • If you belong to a financially stable background, you can donate a cow, some gold, or perhaps some land to the temple or the temple priest.
  • On Phalguna Amavasya, just like every other Amavasya, one should commemorate their ancestors.

Why is Phalguna Amavasya Important? 

It is a known fact that it is a new moon on Amavasya, hence the mind of an individual may not be at peace on that day. In Vedic astrology the Moon is the significator of mental peace and emotions.
