End The Fast After Sunrise

The completion of Ekadashi fast is called Parana. There is a rule to break the fast after sunrise on the next day of Ekadashi i.e. on the Dwadashi Tithi.

The fast should be broken before the end of the Dwadash Tithi, but if the Dwadash Tithi ends before sunrise, then in this situation the fast is broken after sunrise.

Ekadashi fast should not be broken during Hari Vasara. This is the period of the first quarter of the Dwadashi Tithi. Morning time is most suitable for breaking the fast. If a person cannot break the fast at this time, then he should break it only after noon.

Mokshada Ekadashi Folklore

According to mythological beliefs, in ancient times there was a city named Gokul, where a pious king named Vaikhanasa lived. King Vaikhanasa took great care of his subjects and was just, religious and charitable. He loved his subjects immensely, and the people in his kingdom were happy and content. The king himself engaged in religious activities and had deep faith in the Vedas.

One day King Vaikhanasa had a nightmare. In his dream, he saw his father suffering immensely in hell. Seeing this scene the king became very sad and worried. The king called all the learned pundits and astrologers of his court and told them about the dream and asked for their opinion on this matter.

The king asked everyone why his father was suffering in hell and what was the solution to this problem. But at that time no scholar had the exact answer to this question. Then, the ministers suggested the king to go to the Ashram of Parvat Muni and seek his help. There they will definitely get answers to their questions.

On the advice of his ministers, the king reached the Ashram of Parvat Muni and told him about his dream. Parvat Muni told the king, “King! Your father is suffering in hell due to the sins of his previous birth. But, there is a solution you could take for their salvation and liberation.

Parvat Muni said, “You should observe the fast and worship according to the prescribed rituals on the Ekadashi of the bright fortnight of Margashirsha month, which is called Mokshada Ekadashi. This fast will free your father from hell and he will attain salvation.” King Vaikhanasa observed the fast of Mokshada Ekadashi as per the instructions of Parvat Muni. Due to the effect of the fast, his father was freed from hell and attained salvation.
