According to the Hindu Panchang, the lunar eclipse this year will occur on the 25th of March, 2024 starting at 10:23 am in the morning and extend until 3:02 pm in the evening. One interesting fact about this Lunar Eclipse is that it is a penumbral Lunar Eclipse, which means that Earth’s shadow will hide the lunar surface to a certain extent only and not completely.

During Solar Eclipse Sutak is observed for 4 Prahars and during Lunar Eclipse Sutak is observed for 3 Prahars before Eclipse. There are a total of 8 Prahars from Sunrise to Sunrise. Hence Sutak is observed for 12 hours before the Solar Eclipse and for 9 hours before Lunar Eclipse.

The Lunar Eclipse will take place on the same day lasting for about 4 hrs 39 mins and according to the panchang, Holi will be celebrated on 25th March, 2024 with Holika Dahan slated to be done on the 24th March, 2024. The point to note here is that Holi is always celebrated on the last full moon of the Phalgun month and Holika Dahan is also celebrated on the full moon. The full Moon begins at 9:54 am on 24th March 2024 and ends at 12:29 am on 25th March, 2024.

It is notable that this eclipse is a Penumbral eclipse and will not be visible in India. Therefore, the Sutak period will not apply to Indians living in India and Holika Dahan can be easily performed in the evening of 24th March 2024.
