Kartik Purnima Vrat Katha

As per the legends, Lord Kartikey killed the father of Tarakaksha, Kamalaksha, and Vidyunmali, demon Tarakasura. The three sons wanted to avenge the Gods for their father’s death. For this, the demon brother’s trio performed deep meditation so that they could be blessed with the boon of immortality from Lord Brahma and rule the entire universe. After several years of performing austerities, the trio won Lord Brahma’s attention. But Lord Brahma refused to grant the boon of immortality as it was against the law of the universe. The trio in return asked the Lord to grant them a shield from death instead. As per the boon, three of them built three forts- one on earth, one in the sky, and one in heaven, with iron, silver, and gold, respectively. These forts were collectively known as Tripura.

Once a year, Tripura would come in a straight alignment, and only if someone could destroy the three forts with a single arrow would kill the three brothers. Lord Shiva destroyed the Tripura with one arrow by appearing as Tripurari and restored peace.
