Hartalika Teej: Significance of the Name

Hartalika consists of two words i.e. ‘Harit’ and Talika. Harit means to kidnap (Haran) and Talika means friend and Teej is referred to as the third date. This fast is called Hartalika as the friend of Maa Parvati kidnapped her from her father’s house and took her to the forest so that her father does not marry her off to Lord Vishnu. Therefore, this fast came to be known as Hartalika Teej. Even though its fruits are quite generous, the rules and regulations are quite tough. It is believed that the rites associated with this fast are harder than those of Hariyali Teej and Kajri Teej.

Hartalika Teej: Vrat Katha

According to the Katha which finds a mention in Linga Purana, Maa Parvati performed deep austerity at banks of the Ganga to get Lord Shankar as her husband. During this, she remained without water and food for several days. Then, she spent several years performing the same austerity. Her father, Himalaya, had been extremely worried about this. One day, Maharshi Narad came with a proposal for marriage on behalf of Lord Vishnu for Maa Parvati. After hearing Naradji, the father of Mother Parvati said that if Lord Vishnu wanted to marry her daughter, then he had no problem with that proposal but when Mother Parvati came to know about this, she broke down in tears.

After enquiring from her friend, it became clear that Goddess Parvati wanted Lord Shiva as her husband. That is why, she was performing a very deep austerity but her father wanted her to marry Lord Vishnu, but she said that she would prefer to die, than to marry Lord Vishnu. The friend of Maa Parvati took her to the forest in order to get rid of these situations so that her father may not be able to trace her. Maa Parvati started meditating thinking about Lord Shiva in a cave. On the Tritiya Tithi of Shukla Paksha during the month of Bhadrapada during the Hasta Nakshatra, she created an idol of Shiv Linga with sand and worshipped Lord Shiva throughout the night by performing a Jagran. Upon seeing this condition of Maa Parvati, Lord Shiva appeared in front of her and accepted Maa Parvati as her wife.
