Mythological Story of Goddess Shailputri
On the first day of Navratri, devotees worship Goddess Shailputri, the first and foremost form of Navadurga. The name Shailputri means the “Daughter of the Mountain” (“Shail” meaning “mountain” and “Putri” meaning “daughter”). She is the reincarnation of Sati, the first consort of Lord Shiva, and is depicted as a divine goddess riding a bull (Nandi). She wears a half-moon on her forehead and has a trishul in her right hand and a lotus flower in her left.
In her previous birth, Shailputri was Sati, the daughter of King Daksha, and the wife of Lord Shiva. Sati was deeply devoted to her husband, but her father, Daksha Prajapati, despised Shiva and did not approve of their union.
Once, Daksha organized a grand yajna (sacrificial ritual) and invited all the gods and sages, except Lord Shiva. Sati wished to attend the yajna, despite Shiva’s warning that they were unwelcome. Ignoring his advice, she went to her father’s palace, hoping to persuade him. However, when she arrived, she was deeply insulted by Daksha, who spoke disrespectfully about Lord Shiva. Unable to bear her husband’s humiliation, Sati immolated herself in the sacred fire of the yajna, ending her mortal existence.
Upon hearing of Sati’s tragic demise, Shiva was consumed by grief and rage. He lifted Sati’s lifeless body and performed the Tandava, the cosmic dance of destruction, threatening to annihilate the universe. To stop the catastrophe, Lord Vishnu used his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Sati’s body into pieces, which fell across different parts of the Indian subcontinent. These places later became the Shakti Peethas, powerful pilgrimage sites dedicated to the Goddess.
After this, Sati was reborn as Shailputri, the daughter of Himalaya, the King of Mountains, and grew up as Parvati.
