Vijaya Ekadashi 2026: Fasting Katha
The story of Vijaya Ekadashi is associated with the Treta Yuga. When Lord Shri Ram set out toward Lanka along with the Vanara army to free his wife, Goddess Sita, from Ravana, he faced a major challenge, crossing the vast and unfathomable ocean. The sea was so immense that crossing it without any means seemed impossible. Lord Shri Ram was deeply concerned about how to safely take his army across to Lanka. At the same time, Lakshman and the Vanara army were also confused about what course of action should be taken next.
At that moment, a member of the Vanara army suggested that there was an ashram of Sage Bakadalbhya nearby, who was a great ascetic and wise sage. His guidance would surely be beneficial. Lord Shri Ram immediately went to Sage Bakadalbhya’s ashram and explained his problem. The sage then told Lord Shri Ram about the significance of observing the Vijaya Ekadashi fast and said that if he observed this vrat according to proper rituals, he would certainly achieve success in his mission. The sage explained that this Ekadashi falls in the Krishna Paksha of the month of Phalguna and that observing this fast helps even the most difficult tasks to be accomplished.
Following the instructions of Sage Bakadalbhya, Lord Shri Ram, Goddess Sita (in remembrance of the period of exile), Lakshman, and the entire Vanara army observed the Vijaya Ekadashi fast with devotion and discipline. On this day, Lord Vishnu was worshipped according to proper rituals, fasting was observed, and a night-long vigil (jagran) was also performed. Everyone prayed with complete focus to Lord Narayan for victory and success. Due to the power of this fast, Lord Shri Ram received immense inner strength and divine support.
The very next day, the God of Ocean appeared and showed the way to cross the sea. Inspired by him, Nala and Neela began the construction of the bridge, and soon, the building of Ram Setu became possible. In this way, Lord Shri Ram crossed the ocean, conquered Lanka, and freed Goddess Sita.
For this reason, this Ekadashi is called “Vijaya Ekadashi.” It is believed that a person who observes this Ekadashi fast with faith and discipline attains victory over life’s difficulties, enemies are unable to create obstacles, and success is achieved in every endeavor. The fast of Vijaya Ekadashi not only grants worldly victory but also bestows spiritual strength and the special blessings of Lord Vishnu.
