According to the story of Yogini Ekadashi described in religious texts, Lord Krishna himself narrated the story of Yogini Ekadashi fast to Dharmaraja Yudhishthira. 

According to the legend, Alakapuri in heaven was ruled by a king named Kubera who was an ardent devotee of Lord Shiva. He used to worship Mahadev daily with proper rituals and he used to order flowers from a gardener named Hem every day for the Puja. Mali Hemi’s wife was Vishalakshi and she was very beautiful. One day Hem brought flowers from Mansarovar, but instead of taking them to the king, he started joking with his wife at home and became sexually aroused.

On the other hand, the king was waiting for Hem to bring flowers for the Puja and when he did not come by noon, the king sent his soldiers to the gardener’s house to find out why he had not come. The soldiers returned from Hem’s house and told the king everything that he was a man of low character, he was very lustful and he was intimating with his wife.

King Kuber called gardener Hem to his court and at that time the gardener started trembling after seeing the anger of the king. The king became angry and told the gardener that you are a sinner and unrighteous, you did not bring flowers for the worship of Lord Shiva. You have disrespected Lord Shiva and you deserve a curse. Hearing this, the gardener got scared and the king immediately cursed him that he would go to earth and become a leper and would have to suffer separation from his wife. 

After receiving the curse, Mali Hem immediately fell from heaven to earth and his entire body was afflicted with white leprosy. His wife also disappeared somewhere and thus, he started suffering many hardships on earth. He wandered in the forest day and night without food and water.

One day, the gardener suddenly arrived at the hermitage of Markandeya Rishi, grabbed his feet, and told him his entire story. Then Markandeya Rishi said that he was going to tell you about a fast which would lead to your salvation. Markandeya Rishi further said that if you observe the Ekadashi fast of Ashadha Krishna Paksha with full rituals, all your sins will be destroyed. 

After this, gardener Hem bowed to Markandeya Rishi and following his advice, he left from there. When Ekadashi of Krishna Paksha of Ashadha month came, he observed the fast as per the method told by the sage and followed the rules. With the blessings of Lord Vishnu, Mali Hem was saved and he again started living happily in heaven with his wife Vishalakshi.
