Legend Pertaining to Vinayaka Chaturthi

Once, Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati were sitting at the banks of Narmada river. At that time, they were playing Chaupad. Then, they came upon an idea that who would decide their winning or losing in the game. After this, Lord Shiva collected some grains, flower petals etc. and made an effigy from the same and praised it. Further, he referred to effigy as a child and told that he and his wife had come to play Chaupad and it would decide who would win or lose the game.

After this, Maa Parvati and Lord Shiva started playing Chaupad. They played 3 games and Maa Parvati won all three of them. However, when they asked the child to take the decision, it declared Mahadev a winner. After hearing this, Maa Parvati got furious and cursed the child to become lame and remain in his mud form. Then, the child tendered its apology and sought forgiveness for the mistake.

Maa Parvati felt pity after the child had sought forgiveness for the mistake. Further, she said that some Nagakanyas would come for Ganesh Puja in some time and that he should also observe the fast like them. She added that doing this will help the child attain her blessings owing to the same. After saying this, Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati went towards Kailash Parvat.

After one year, some Nagakanyas came and observed the fast of Lord Ganesha at that place. The child asked the Vidhi of the fast and observed it for 21 days consecutively.  Lord Ganesha appeared on seeing the devotion of the child and asked what he wished the most.

The child wished to be blessed with energy so that it could go to its parents. Then, Lord Ganesha said goodbye and disappeared from that place. Further, the child went to Kailash Parvat and narrated everything to Lord Shiva.

Bhagwan Shankar narrated everything to Maa Parvati and owing to the same, she desired to meet her son, Kartikeya. After this, Maa Parvati also observed the fast for 21 days and Bhagwan Kartikeya himself came up to her with the influence of the fast. Since then, the fast of Ganesh Chaturthi is considered to be a fast of being blessed with all desires in life.
