As per the legendary stories, there has been a demon named Nadijangha in the Satyuga. The demon had a son named Mur and he was a powerful & regarded as a mighty demon. He also established supremacy over Gods like Indra, Varun, Yama, Agni, Vayu, Ish, Moon, etc with fights. All these Gods have lost all the fights with the demon. All the Gods, after getting troubled by the demon Mur, reached out to Lord Shiva and presented their plight. Then, Mahadev advised them to approach Lord Shri Hari Vishnu, the creator of the world, to get the right assistance for troubles. Demon Mur has taken over the heavenly world and due to it, the Gods started running here and there. Indra then obeyed the words of Lord Shiva and reached out to Shri Hari Vishnu to narrate the pain of the Gods in detail. Lord Vishnu promised the God to save them from Mur and then reached out to the battlefield, where Mur with his army was fighting the Gods. Mur also attacked Shri Hari Vishnu as soon as he watched the Lord. As per the story, this war continued for ten thousand years. The body of demon Mur was disintegrated with the arrow of Lord Vishnu but still he didn’t give up.

While fighting, Lord Vishnu got tired and for resting went to Badrikashram cave. Then Demon Mur chased Lord Vishnu and reached the same cave. He noticed that Lord Vishnu was sleeping and taking this as an advantage, the demon was about to Shri Hari Vishnu, a goddess descended from the body of Lord Vishnu. Demon Mur was then killed by the Goddess and she saved the life of Lord Vishnu.
Lord Vishnu informed the goddess that she was born on the Ekadashi date of Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha month, thus the name will be Ekadashi from the day. As Devi Ekadashi was born on this day, it started being referred to as the Utpanna Ekadashi. The devotees observing fast on this day will attain Vaikuntha.
