As per the legends, there once lived a poor Brahmin couple in a kingdom. Due to financial constraints, they were unable to marry their daughter. Disheartened by their poverty, a Brahmin couple sought advice from a monk, who informed them about a washerwoman in the nearby village who lives with her son and daughter-in-law. “If your daughter serves that washerwoman, the washerwoman will be delighted and give her the vermilion of her authority, and the girl’s marriage will be fixed,” he stated. Hearing this, the girl went to the washerwoman’s house and began performing the chores, while the washerwoman and her daughter-in-law were unaware.
One day the washerwoman asked his daughter-in-law, “how do you do all this work so quickly?” to which the daughter-in-law replied, “I thought that you do all this work.” The washerwoman was astonished and began to observe. When the washerwoman woke up one morning, she noticed a girl quietly performing all of the household chores. This continued for a few days until one day the washerwoman asked the girl what was the reason behind it. The girl told the washerwoman what the monk said.
After listening to her, the washerwoman handed her own vermilion to the girl, and the washerwoman’s husband died at the same moment. Saddened, the girl left the house and went to a Peepal tree, where she picked 108 brick pieces and circled them 108 times before throwing them one by one. The washerwoman’s spouse came to life by doing this to her. The girl had favorable outcomes as a consequence of her circumambulation of the Peepal tree.
