Sawan Month: Significance

The month of Sawan is considered special for the devotees of Lord Shiva as this month is his heart and soul. As per prevailing legends, Maa Parvati observed a long fast and remained drowned in deep meditation by detaching herself from worldly sorrows and happiness to get Lord Shiva as her husband. This is one of the reasons that Lord Shiva likes Sawan month very much. The followers of Sanatan Dharma from all the corners of the world offer water to Lord Shiva in his famous temples. One of the gems was Halahal Vish or Poison.

It is said that this poison was so venomous that it could be dangerous for the whole world. In such a situation, Lord Shiva drank this poison to save the world from the wrath of this poison and kept it in his throat. Since the poison was extremely dangerous and poisonous, the throat of Lord Shiva turned blue, thereby giving him the name Neelkanth. At that moment, Ravana, the supreme devotee of Lord Mahadev, brought Gangajal in a Kanwar and anointed him with the same. It was only after this that Bholenath got rid of this poison.
