The Mythological Story of Shattila Ekadashi

The mythological tale of Shattila Ekadashi, as recounted in scriptures, unfolds as follows: Sage Narad once journeyed to Vaikuntha, the divine realm of Lord Vishnu, seeking insights into the significance of the Shattila Ekadashi fast. In response to Narad’s persistent inquiries, Lord Vishnu shared a narrative from ancient times about a Brahmin’s widow on Earth. Despite being a devout worshiper, diligently engaging in rituals, and purifying her body through a month-long observance of the fast, she neglected to provide food donations to Brahmins and deities.

Realizing that, despite residing in Vaikuntha and being an unwavering devotee, she would perpetually remain unsatisfied, I personally approached her one day in the guise of a beggar to seek alms.

When, in the role of a beggar, I requested alms from her, she handed me a ball of clay. Taking the ball, I returned to Vaikuntha. Subsequently, she passed away, gaining a place in my abode where she received a hut and a mango tree. Observing the empty hut, she approached me anxiously, questioning, “I have always followed the path of righteousness, so why have I received an empty hut, Lord?” I explained that this was due to her failure to practice food donation and offering me a ball of clay as alms.

Lord Vishnu elaborated that when celestial maidens come to meet her, she should not open the door until they instruct her on the observance of the Shattila Ekadashi fast. Adhering to Lord Vishnu’s instructions, the woman observed the Shattila Ekadashi fast as guided by Devakanya. The impact of this fast filled her hut with food and wealth. In conclusion, Lord Vishnu stated, “O Narad, a person who sincerely observes the Shattila Ekadashi fast and donates sesame seeds attains liberation and prosperity in their life.”
