Raksha Bandhan 2022 Celebration On 11 Or 12 August?

We all are confused about the date of Raksha Bandhan 2022, whether it will be celebrated on the 11th or 12th of August. This is because the Pooranmashi Tithi is starting from 10:40 am on 11 August, 2022, and will end at 7:06 am on 12 August, 2022. We calculate Tithi as per the sunrise, so because of this situation, we will celebrate Raksha Bandhan on 11 August. The reason behind this is that we are supposed to tie the Rakhi during Apran Kaal (peak of noon), which is regarded as the most important factor while celebrating Raksha Bandhan. This period will fall on the 11th, and therefore, we must tie the Rakhi to our brothers’ wrists on 11 August only.

Now, let’s clear your confusion regarding the Bhadra timing:

Raksha Bandhan Bhadra End Time- 08:51 PM

Raksha Bandhan Bhadra Punchha- 05:17 PM to 06:18 PM

Raksha Bandhan Bhadra Mukha- 06:18 PM to 08:00 PM

Mythologies Associated With Raksha Bandhan

As per the legends, once Alexander was defeated by Purushottam of Punjab, a famous Hindu King. This is when Alexander’s wife tied a Rakhi on Purushottam’s wrist and asked him, as her sister, not to kill her husband.

Another mythology suggests that when Bahadur Shah was trying to invade Chittor’s kingdom, Rani Karnavati, the queen of Chittor, sent a sacred thread, Rakhi, to Emperor Humayun, seeking his help to protect their kingdom from Bahadur Shah. Humayun came to help his sister despite belonging to another religion.

Another prominent legend associated with Raksha Bandhan is from Mahabharata. It is believed that Lord Krishna cut his finger one day, and it started bleeding badly. On seeing the wound, Draupadi instantly tore a piece of cloth from her saree to cover Krishna’s bleeding finger. It is said that this piece of cloth took the form of Rakhi. On that day, Lord Krishna promised her sister Draupadi that he would protect her from all evil. When later, Kauravas dragged Draupadi into the court, tried to disrobe her and manhandle her, it was Krishna who saved her pride by offering her a never-ending cloth.

So, all these legends show how since ancient times, the bond between a brother and a sister is considered sacred and how much it is respected.

Raksha Bandhan & Indra Dev

We have read many legends associated with Raksha Bandhan, but a lesser-known yet very interesting story is of Indra Dev. According to this legend, when there was a war between the Demons and the Gods, Demon king Bali disgraced Lord Indra. For the lord of Rain and Sky, this was a significant downfall. This is when Indra Dev’s wife, Sachi, consulted Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu gave Sachi a thread bracelet and said it was sacred. Sachi blessed Indra by tying this thread on Indra’s wrist. This energized Indra, and he could defeat all demons and retrieve everything lost. This is one of the first ancient texts that prove that this sacred thread called Rakhi has protective powers. This legend also highlights how women in ancient times used to tie sacred threads to protect men who were going to wars and how Rakhi is not exclusive to just the bonds between brothers and sisters.
