  3. On Mahashivratri, one must chant Shiva mantras at night. One can also recite Rudrashtak, Shivashtak and Shiva Stuti during the night to please Lord Shiva and get his mercy.
  4. On the day of Shivratri, many people worship in Char Pahar. If you also want to worship Lord Shiva for Char Pahar, then worship should be done with milk in the first half of the night, curd in the second half, ghee in the third hour and honey in the fourth hour. Water must be used in every phase, this will give you special grace of Lord Shiva’s. Why is Worshiping During Char Pahar Special?
The festival of Mahashivratri is a day when you can fulfill all your desires and can get free from all the troubles of life by the grace of Lord Shiva. Although worshiping Lord Shiva, at any time of  the day of Shivaratri, is itself considered beneficial. But still, according to Shiv Purana, the night time worship is considered to be of special importance. This is the reason why Lord Shiva is worshiped by the devotees on Mahashivratri in Char Pahar i.e. from evening to next day morning i.e. till Brahmamuhurta. According to the beliefs, the worship of Lord Shiva in Char pehar is for Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha.

1. The puja of the first Pahar usually started in the evening. The best time for this is considered from 6 pm to 9 pm. In the first pahar, milk is offered symbolically to Lord Shiva. During this time, the Shiva Mantra “Namah Shivay” or Shiva Stuti is recited. Worshiping the first Pahar strengthens the religion.

2. The second Pahar is worshiped between 9 pm to 12 pm. In the second part of worship, curd is offered to Lord Shiva and Shiva is anointed with water. It is considered mandatory to chant the Shiva mantra “Namah Shivaya” during this time. Worship done in this time  strengthens ‘Arth’ i.e. financial strength.

3. The puja of the third Pahar is done between 12 and 3 o’clock in the night. During this time, Lord Shiva is anointed with water after tilak with cow’s ghee. Shiva Stuti should be recited in the third pahar. The meditation done during this time makes the soul unite with the Supreme Soul. Shiva worship in the third hour gives freedom from libido.

4. Fourth Pahar is worshiped in Brahmamuhurta i.e. between 3 pm to 6 pm. During this period, after applying honey on the Shivling, it should be anointed with water. The recitation of Shiva Mantra “Namah Shivay” or Stuti of Shiva at this time provides salvation.
