As per the first legend connected with Lord Krishna, there was a demon named Narkasura who by his mediation got a boon from deities that whenever he dies, it should happen through the hands of a lady. Having this boon, he started lashing out atrocities on all three worlds. Observing all this brutal treatment, Shri Krishna decided to eliminate him which he did with the help of his wife, Satya Bhama, on Chaturdashi Tithi in Kartik month. The second Katha goes on that Lord Vishnu in the form of a dwarf (Vamana form) asked king Bali for two steps of land which he could measure the entire land with just two steps and asked Raja Bali where he should put the third step. In reply, the king offered his head, and observing this, Lord Vishnu was very much pleased and asked Raja Bali if he wanted any boon. The King replied in affirmative and requested to be blessed with a boon that his kingdom should prevail right from the day of Trayodashi to Amavasya every year and during this time, whosoever will celebrate Diwali in his state and offer lamps/Diyas, they would not go to hell.
