Why Did Lord Vishnu Take The Mohini Avatar?
Mohini Ekadashi is named after Mohini, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. According to Mythology, when the gods and demons churned the ocean to obtain nectar, a war broke out between the gods and demons to obtain it. At that time, the conflict over the nectar was resolved.
The Mohini form of Lord Vishnu captivated the demons with her beauty and trapped all the gods in her web of love and made them drink nectar. Meanwhile, an Asura named Rahu disguised himself as a God and secretly drank the nectar. When Lord Vishnu came to know about this, he, in his Mohini Avatar, severed his head from his body with his Sudarshan Chakra.
Due to the touch of nectar, his head became immortal, which came to be known as Rahu and the torso was called Ketu, since then the Ekadashi of Vaishakha Shukla Paksha is called Mohini Ekadashi, which is considered to be a symbol of victory of Dharma over Adharma.

Mohini Ekadashi 2026 Folklore
According to the folklore associated with Mohini Ekadashi, there was a place called Bhadravati on the banks of river Saraswati. There was the rule of Chandravanshi King Dhritiman who was very religious and was also a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and was always engrossed in his devotion.
The king had five sons, but his fifth son Dhrishtabuddhi was wicked and was involved in sinful activities. He used to gamble, consume meat and alcohol and behave immorally with women. Saddened by these bad habits of his son, the king abandoned him from the kingdom and family.
After being abandoned by his father, Dhrishtabuddhi earned his living by selling his jewellery and clothes for a few days. But now he had no money left to eat, so, distressed by hunger and thirst, he started wandering here and there. Dhrishtabuddhi started committing robbery to satisfy his hunger and to stop him from doing this sinful act, the king imprisoned him. After this, the king expelled him from the kingdom.
Now he started living in the forest and started killing animals and birds to fill his stomach. Once, distressed by hunger, he reached the ashram of sage Kaundinya. At that time the month of Vaishakh was going on and the sage had gone to take bath in the river Ganga. Sage Kaundinya’s clothes were wet due to bathing in the river and some drops from his clothes fell on Dhrishtabuddhi. This changed the sinful mind of Dhrishtabuddhi and he confessed all his crimes before the sage. He asked the sage for a solution to get rid of his sins.
Sage Kaundinya asked Dhrishtabuddhi to observe the Ekadashi fast of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakha and he also told him that by observing this Ekadashi fast he would be freed from all his sins. Dhrishtabuddhi did as the sage said and all his sins were destroyed and he attained Vishnu Loka after his death. According to religious beliefs, by observing Mohini Ekadashi fast with a true heart, a person gets freedom from worldly attachment.
