The festival of Makar Sankranti is about to knock at your door as it is celebrated on January 14 every year. When the Sun enters Capricorn from Sagittarius, this period is known as the transit of the Sun so this day is known as Makar Sankranti. On this day, the Sun moves from South to North. It is believed that Lord Sun goes to meet his son, Saturn on this very day. Since Capricorn is the house of Saturn, so it is called Makar Sankranti.
Besides this, Bhishma Pitamah renounced his body at Surya Uttarayan on this very day during the battle of Mahabharata and his Shraddha Karma was also performed.
There is another belief associated with this day that when Raja Sagar performed Ashwamedh Yagya, Lord Indra through his tricks tied the horse to the Ashram of Kapil Muni. When the sons of the King came in search of the horse, then they were taken as thieves. At this, Kapil Muni turned 60,000 sons into Ashes. Then, his son Bhagirath brought Ganga to the Earth on the same day. Since then, the tradition of celebrating this festival has been followed.

Significance and Rituals to be Followed on this day
- If possible, take a dip in a holy river or Ganga, otherwise, add some drops of Gangajal in bathing water at home and take a bath with the same.
- Recite Stotra and worship Lord Vishnu.
- Then, offer water mixed with sesame to Lord Sun.
- Now, donate food, blanket, sesame, jaggery, Laddoos and Khichdi to needy persons.
- Donations made on this day at the banks of the Ganga or any other holy river give hundred times results.
At the time of the transit of the Sun, donation must be carried on till 8 Ghatis or 16 Ghatis. This year, Lord Sun will appear at 2:28 p.m. so, the auspicious timings for donation will be from 2:28 to 5:17 PM.
