Mythological Story Associated With Mahashivratri
According to the scriptures, once during the Krishna Paksha (waning phase) of the month of Phalguna, Nishadraj went hunting with his dog. However, he was disheartened because he could not find any prey that day. Exhausted from hunger and thirst, he sat down by a pond, where a Shivling was placed beneath a Bael tree. To rest his body, Nishadraj broke a few Bael leaves, which fell onto the Shivling.
Later, to wash his hands, he sprinkled water from the pond, and some droplets fell on the Shivling as well. During this time, an arrow from his bow fell to the ground. As he bent down to pick it up, he unknowingly bowed in front of the Shivling. In this way, Nishadraj, unintentionally, performed the worship of Lord Shiva on Shivratri.
When Nishadraj passed away, the messengers of Yama (God of Death) came to take him. However, the followers of Lord Shiva protected him and sent the Yama’s messengers away. Nishadraj received the auspicious fruit of Shiv worship on Mahashivratri, and it was from this incident that the practice of worshiping Lord Shiva on Shivratri began.
