The Mythological Story of Lunar Eclipse
According to Hinduism, solar and lunar eclipses are witnessed in conjunction with Rahu-Ketu. There is a mythological story related to the eclipses which goes like this-
According to the religious scriptures, there was a monster named Swarbhanu who drank a few drops of the holy water that came out of the ocean during the Samudra Manthan. Swarbhanu took resemblance to the Gods by deceit and sat in the line with them. But Surya Dev and Chandra Dev recognized him and informed Mohini, who was an avatar of Lord Vishnu.
As a result, Lord Vishnu separated Swarbhanu’s head from his body with the help of his Sudarshan Chakra. But since Swarbhanu had already drunk the holy water, his head– Rahu and his body– Ketu became immortal. Hence to avenge Rahu and Ketu, there have been Solar and Lunar Eclipses since then.
