Legend of Lalita Jayanti

As per the ancient text, it is said that once, the Yagya was taking place at Naimisharanya where everyone stood up to greet King Daksha Prajapati but Lord Shankar did not move an inch. It is said that king Daksha did not like this attitude of Lord Shankar and took it as an insult. Then, Daksha organised a Yagya at his place and invited all deities. But, to avenge the insult, the king did not invite Lord Shiva. When Maa Sati came to know about this, she went directly to attend the Yagya without taking permission from Lord Shankar. The king spoke highly ill of Lord Shiva during the Yagya. After reaching here, she came to know about the insult and got highly pained and thus, she sacrificed her life by jumping into Agni Kund.

When Lord Shiva came to know about this sacrifice, he reached there instantly. He lifted the dead body of his wife on his shoulder and started roaming around the world. The situation of the entire world got highly disturbed by the presence of Lord Shiva and cut the dead body of Maa Sati with Sudarshan Chakra into pieces. After this, the places where the pieces of the dead body fell, different types of shapes emerged and then, they turned into super powers (Shakti Peeth). It is said that the heart of Maa Sati fell at  Naimisharanya and therefore, this place is known as Linga Dharini Shakti Peeth and Lord Shiva is venerated in the Linga form and a temple of Maa Lalita is also situated here.

As per another legend, it is said that Lalita Devi emerged when the existence of the lower world started to disappear by Lord Vishnu’s Sudarshan Chakra and the entire earth started submerging into water. Being terrified, all the sages began to worship Maa Lalita and then, she appeared and stopped this Chakra through her devotional powers and after that, the earth got a new life.
