Holi: Legend

Many legends associated with the festival of Holi are found in Puranas but the most important one is the story of Hiranyakashyap, Prahlad and Holika. The other legend is concerned with the Leelas of Radha-Krishna and the demoness Dhundi. Holika Dahan is performed a day before the festival of colours i.e. Holi. The Purnima of Phalgun month is celebrated as the triumph of good over evil.

As per the most prevalent legend, Hiranyakashyap got egoistic because of his might and power, got through boons and started considering himself as a god. He tried to burn his son with the help of his sister. Since Holika was blessed with a boon of not being burnt in the fire, she sat in the fire on the order of Hiranyakashyap. Prahlada, the son of Hiranyakashyap, was a supreme devotee of Lord Vishnu and Hiranakshyap did not like it. Prahlada even after sitting in the fire, kept on worshipping Lord Vishnu and therefore, he remained unaffected while the Holika was reduced to ashes.

As per another legend concerning Holi, it is said that once Gopal asked Maa Yashoda why he was not as charming as Radha. Then, Maa Yashoda humorously told him that if he would apply colour on Radha’s face, her colour would also turn like his. After this, Kanha played colourful Holi with Radha and Gopis and since then, the festival has been celebrated as a colourful festival.

As per one more legend associated with this festival, it is said that the female demon named Dhundi was banished from the earth by the people because of the curse of Lord Shiva and this festival is celebrated in her remembrance.
