First Story
As per the legend, there was a very powerful and strong demon named Tripurasura in ancient times. He was the king of three cities (Tripur) and had terrorized all the gods & humans. With rigorous Tapasya, Tripurasura had obtained a boon from Lord Brahma that only one person would be able to kill him. That person would be able to kill Tripurasura only if he could destroy all three cities together. Because of this boon, the demon Tripurasura became more arrogant and established his rule over the world.

The gods took refuge in Lord Shiva getting troubled by the terror of Tripurasura. They prayed to Lord Shiva for killing the demon and freeing them from his tyranny. Lord Shiva accepted the prayers of the gods and prepared to defeat Tripurasura. Then lord Shiva used his divine bow to mount a powerful arrow and all three cities of Tripurasura simultaneously. This marked the end of the demon Tripurasura.
After the death of Tripurasura, the gods celebrated this special day as Tripura Purnima and it is considered a symbol of the glory of Lord Shiva. Since that incident, Kartik Purnima has been considered a special occasion for the worship of Lord Shiva.
