Kajari Teej 2024: Observe Kajari Teej 2024 Fast!

According to the Hindu calendar, Kajari Teej is celebrated annually on the third day of Krishna Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. Also known as Kajjali Teej in some regions, this festival takes place three days after Raksha Bandhan and is marked by great enthusiasm among married women, as it holds significant meaning for them. On this day, married women observe a fast to pray for the long life of their husbands.

The Kajari Teej 2024 fast is similar to the fasts observed on Hariyali Teej and Hartalika Teej, aimed at ensuring uninterrupted good fortune. Women who observe this fast refrain from consuming water throughout the day and, in the evening, break their fast after sighting the moon and offering water to it, much like the customs of Karva Chauth. It is customary to worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on this day. Performing the rituals properly on Kajari Teej is believed to bring the special blessings of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Mythologically, Goddess Parvati is said to have been the first to observe the Kajari Teej fast. Pleased with her devotion and penance, Lord Shiva accepted her as his wife. Let’s delve deeper into the significance of the Kajari Teej 2024 fast, the rituals involved, and other related aspects.

According to an ancient legend, a poor Brahmin lived in a village, struggling to make ends meet. He was so destitute that he barely had enough food to eat. He lived with his wife, who was also a Brahmin. During the month of Bhadrapada, the Brahmin’s wife observed the Kajari Teej fast. She informed her husband that she needed some gram flour (sattu) for the fast. The Brahmin replied that he had no means to procure the sattu. However, his wife insisted that she needed it, even if it required stealing or robbing.

That night, the Brahmin quietly entered the shop of a moneylender. He stealthily took some gram dal, ghee, and sugar, measuring out just over one kilogram, and prepared the sattu. As he was about to leave, the noise he made woke the shop’s servants, who began shouting, “Thief! Thief!” The moneylender arrived and caught the Brahmin red-handed. The Brahmin explained that he was not a thief but a poor Brahmin whose wife had undertaken the Kajari Teej fast and needed the sattu. He had only come to obtain it.

When the moneylender searched the Brahmin, he found nothing but the sattu. Meanwhile, the moon had risen, and the Brahmin’s wife was anxiously waiting for the sattu. The moneylender, moved by the Brahmin’s story, decided to consider the Brahmin’s wife as his sister from that day forward. He generously gave the Brahmin the sattu, along with gifts such as jewelry, mehndi, and a substantial amount of money, and then sent him on his way.

Upon returning home, the Brahmin recounted the entire story to his wife. Together, they joyfully performed the Kajari Mata worship with all the necessary rituals. Just as the Brahmin’s life improved due to Kajari Mata’s blessings, the deity’s grace is believed to bring prosperity and welfare to everyone.
