In Hinduism, there are three types of Teej that fall in one year (mostly in July-August), including Hariyali Teej, Hartalika Teej, and Kajari Teej. Every Teej festival has special significance and there is a ritual of observing a fast on every Teej by married women. Hariyali Teej is the first one to fall in a year, in the month of Shravana. Next is the Kajari Teej which is observed 15 days after the Hariyali Teej. The last one is Hartalika Teej that comes almost a month after the first Teej, in the month of Bhadrapada.

Kajari Teej is celebrated during the lunar month of Bhadrapada, on the third day of Krishna Paksha. On this day, married women observe a fast for the longevity of their husbands, and happiness and prosperity in the house. Kajari Teej Vrat is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Maa Parvati. It is also believed that if the unmarried girls observe the Kajari Teej fast and worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati with proper rituals, then they get the desired groom.

Kajari Teej Fast: Puja Rituals

  • The married or unmarried women and girls observing the Kajari Teej fast must wake up early in the morning and take a bath. 
  • Then the idols of Maa Gauru and Lord Shiva are made with cow dung. If you want, you can also purchase idols of the god and goddess. 
  • Now place the idols in the Puja ghar and cover them with a cloth.
  • During the Puja, offer 16 things to Goddess Gauri.
  • To Lord Shiva, offer bael leaves, cow’s milk, Ganga Jal, madarak flowers, Bhang Dhatura, and other offerings. 
  • Now listen to Lord Shiva and Maa Gauri’s Katha. 
  • Then light incense and lamp and perform the Aarti. Observe the fast after Moon sighting in the evening. 
  • Married women on this day do ‘Solah Shringar’ and offer different offerings to Maa Parvati including turmeric, Henna, bindi, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, sweets, fruits, Sattu, Mauli-Akshat, etc.

Kajari Teej 2022: Legend

According to mythology, it is believed that Maa Parvati wanted to marry Lord Shiva and she was keen to make her wish come true. She was desperate and devoted, and decided to go to any extent to win over Mahadev. When Lord Shiva asked her to prove her dedication towards him, she observed penance for 108 years. Her devotion and dedication made Lord Shiva accept Maa Parvati as his faithful wife. This is why Kajari Teej is celebrated.
