Jaya Ekadashi Folklore

Indra Dev, the god of heaven, once held a festival in his palace, which was attended by gods, heavenly men, saints, and so on. Gandharva sang songs at this festival, and Gandharva females danced. One of these Gandharvas was named Malyavan, and he sang highly melodious songs. He was as stunning as his voice. At the same period, among the Gandharva girls was a stunning dancer named Pushyavati. Pushyavati and Malyavan met at the festivities and both lost their senses. As a result, both of them diverged from their usual rhythm. Devraj Indra was enraged by this and cursed both of them, saying they would be denied heaven and forced to live as monsters on Earth.

Due to Lord Indra’s curse, both of them were born as demons, and while dwelling on a tree in the Himalayan highlands, they encountered numerous difficulties. The demon’s existence was extremely poor and as a result, both of them remained quite sad. On the Ekadashi date of Shukla Paksha in Magh month, they both ate just fruits for the entire day and spent the night praying to God and repenting for their mistake. The next morning, both of them died of cold as a result of having unknowingly or unconsciously finished the Jaya Ekadashi fast, which released them from the monster species and returned them to heaven.
