January 2024 Religious Significance

In Hinduism, each day and month holds a unique significance, which contributes to the distinctiveness and diversity of each month. January 2024 holds religious importance as it is the first month of the new year. January is called Paush in Sanatan Dharma. Due to the numerous fasts and celebrations observed during this month, it takes on significance in this context.

In the Hindu calendar, Pausha is the name of the tenth month of the year. The majority of Pausha months fall in December or January on the Gregorian calendar. The Panchang states that January 2024, the first month of the year, will begin as the month of Paush and end as the month of Magh on January 31, 2024.

The month of Pausha, which follows the month of Margashirsha, is highly significant. Lord Sun, a representation of vitality and light, is this month. In Hinduism, each month has a designated position in the calendar, and the month of Pausha is no exception. As we have previously mentioned in other writings, the Hindu faith bases each month’s name on a star. Because of this, the month of Pausha is named after the day of Pausha Purnima, when the Moon is in Pausha Nakshatra.

The religious writings about the month of Pausha state that worshiping the Sun God during this month is particularly auspicious and helpful. Because the Sun God is believed to be the form of Bhag, the god of Paush month, worshiping Sun in this month is beneficial. Fasting for the Sun God and presenting Arghya to him in the month of Pausha, according to beliefs, is extremely beneficial. This produces favorable effects for the person. According to myth, following a fast on every Sunday in the month of Paush and offering sesame rice khichdi to the Sun God as Prasad increases the devotee’s strength.

You might be surprised to learn that the month of Pausha is also known as Chhota Pitru Paksha. The reason for this is that mythological traditions hold that if a person conducts Pind Daan and Shraddha rituals for his ancestors during the month of Pausha, he would receive great advantages.  In addition, the ancestors’ souls find tranquility. In contrast, January 2024 ends in the Hindu month of Magha, which is the eleventh month of the year. This month will begin on January 26, 2024, and last through February 24, 2024.

Religiously speaking, the month of Magh holds a particular place, just like the month of Paush. Bathing in the Ganga during this month is seen to be auspicious. It is thought that a person’s sins are all erased when they give, bathe, and fast during Magh. In addition, during the sacred month of Magha, people bathe in the Ganga and present Arghya to the Sun God. They are fortunate to be happy and prosperous. Worshiping Lord Vishnu also grants the devotee a happy and peaceful life.

As per the Hindu calendar, it is customary to observe the Shivratri fast on the Chaturdashi of Krishna Paksha on the first of every month. Fasting on the day of Paush Amavasya is believed to offer protection against Pitra and Kaalsarp Doshas.

Pongal (15 January 2024, Monday): Pongal is the main celebration in Tamil Nadu, and it is widely observed with a lot of fanfare. The Pongal festival lasts for four days in a row, and on this day in Tamil Nadu, the New Year officially begins. Uttarayan (15 January 2024, Monday): According to astrology, the Sun shifts its position twice a year, lasting six months as Uttarayan and six months as Dakshinayan. The transit of the Sun from Capricorn to Gemini is known as Uttarayan. Uttarayan is regarded as the month of the gods and goddesses. In such a case, during the next six months, auspicious and auspicious deeds such as house warming, yagya, marriage, and mundan are carried out during this time.

Makar Sankranti (15 January 2024, Monday): Hindus celebrate Makar Sankranti with tremendous fervor and excitement. The name Makar Sankranti comes from the fact that on this day, the Sun, the monarch of the nine planets, moves from the sign of Sagittarius to the sign of Capricorn, which is the sign of his son Saturn. Makar Sankranti is a day to celebrate the sun god, who should be worshiped according to traditions. It is also a day to give and bathe.
