Popular Stories Related To Holi

Numerous popular stories are associated with Holi, including:

The Story Of Bhakt Prahlad

According to Hindu mythology, the ritual of Holika Dahan primarily commemorates Bhakt Prahlad. Despite being born into a demon clan, Prahlad remained a devoted follower of Lord Vishnu. His father, the powerful demon king Hiranyakashipu, grew furious upon witnessing Prahlad’s unwavering devotion to Vishnu. Displeased with his son’s faith, Hiranyakashipu subjected Prahlad to various forms of severe torment. Hiranyakashipu’s sister, Holika, possessed a garment that rendered her immune to fire. She deceived Prahlad into sitting on her lap in the fire to kill him. However, through Lord Vishnu’s grace, Holika was reduced to ashes, and Prahlad survived. Since then, Holika Dahan has been celebrated annually with immense enthusiasm, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.

The Holi Of Radha-Krishna

The Holi of Radha-Krishna symbolizes their unbreakable love. According to mythology, the celebration of Holi originated with the Barsana Holi of Lord Krishna and Radha in ancient times. Even today, the vibrant Holi of Barsana and Nandgaon is globally renowned, with the festival being celebrated here with great fervor.

The Union Of Shiva And Parvati

According to the Shiva Purana, Parvati, the daughter of the Himalayas, was performing severe penance to marry Lord Shiva, who was also deeply engrossed in meditation. Indra desired the union of Shiva and Parvati because it was destined for Parvati’s son to slay the demon Tarakasura. Due to this reason, Indra and other deities sent Kamadeva to disrupt Lord Shiva’s meditation. Kamadeva struck Shiva with his ‘Pushp’ (flower) arrow to break his meditation. This caused feelings of love and desire to arise in Lord Shiva’s mind, breaking his meditation. Consequently, Lord Shiva became very angry and opened his third eye, reducing Kamadeva to ashes. After Lord Shiva’s meditation was disrupted, all the deities united to convince him to marry Goddess Parvati. Overjoyed by Rati’s boon of reviving her husband and Lord Bholenath’s proposal of marriage, the deities celebrated this day as a festival.
