Mythological Significance

According to a mythological legend associated with this festival, it is said that one day Lord Shiva himself mentioned about this fast to Maa Parvati and said while describing, “Lady Parvati, you took 107 births just to get me as your better half, your husband, but couldn’t really get your wish fulfilled. However, on the 108th time when you were born in the household of Mountain King Himalayas, you observed great penance to get me as your husband.

During this period, you gave up everything and spent your days chewing dried leaves. At that time, neither were you aware of the weather nor time. Your father was also very angry after seeing your condition. You had chosen a cave to carry out your penance where you become completely absorbed in my devotion.”

He continued and said, “On Bhadrapada Tritiya Shukla, you carved a Shiv Linga with mere sand and directed your devotion. Pleased with your devotion, I fulfilled your wish. After that, you discussed this thought with your father regarding me being your spouse saying ‘Father, I have devoted a large part of my life to Lord Shiva, and now He too has embraced me after being happy with my devotion. Now only if you agree to get me and Lord Shiva married, I will come with you.’

On hearing Mata Parvati, the Mountain King Himalaya agreed to her condition and got them both married with great fervour and blessings. Lord Shiva further said, “O Parvati! Both of us got married as a result of the fast you had observed and rituals you had carried out on Bhadrapad Shukla Tritiya to attain me as your spouse. The significance of this unique fast is that any woman performing this fast with full devotion will attain desired fruits and my blessings.

This is why it is believed that any woman who observes this fast with full dedication remains blessed in her marital life like Maa Parvati.
