Mythological Story Behind Govardhan Puja 2024
According to the mythological narrative, there was a time when Indra Dev, the king of the gods, became arrogant due to his immense powers. In response, Lord Krishna devised a plan to humble him. One day, as the residents of Gokul busily prepared various dishes, Lord Krishna approached Mother Yashoda and inquired, “What festival are you all preparing for?” She replied that they were getting ready to worship Indra Dev.
Upon hearing this, Lord Krishna questioned the rationale behind their worship of Indra Dev. Mother Yashoda explained that it was because of Indra Dev’s blessings that they enjoyed good rainfall, which resulted in abundant harvests and ample fodder for their cows.
Taking her words into consideration, Lord Krishna suggested that instead of honoring Indra Dev, they should worship Govardhan Hill, where their cows grazed and which provided rain through its vegetation. The residents of Gokul found merit in Krishna’s suggestion and agreed to begin their worship of Govardhan.
Indra Dev, witnessing this shift in devotion, was enraged and unleashed a torrential downpour to take revenge for what he perceived as an insult. The rain fell so heavily that it struck fear into the hearts of the Gokul residents. This relentless rain continued for seven days.
In a display of divine power, Lord Krishna lifted Govardhan Hill with his smallest finger, providing shelter to all the residents of Gokul beneath it. Realizing his folly, Indra Dev came to understand that he was not contending with an ordinary human. He sought forgiveness from Lord Krishna and offered his worship, bringing him various offerings. It is said that following this incident in the Dvapara Yuga, the tradition of celebrating Govardhan Puja was established.
