Gayatri Mantra

 ॐ भूर् भुवः स्वः। तत् सवितुर्वरेण्यं।

भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि। धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ।

tat saviturvareṇyaṃ।

bhargo devasya dhīmahi।

dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt ॥

 Who is Goddess Gayatri?

 Mata Gayatri is referred to as “Vedmata”. It is from her that the four Vedas (Rigveda, Yajurveda, Samaveda and Atharva), Sruti and the scriptures are considered to be originated. According to Hindu religious scriptures, the governing Goddess of Tridev, i.e., Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh also consider Gayatri and hence she is also called “Devamata”. 

According to Hindu religious texts, she is the incarnation of Lakshmi, Saraswati and Parvati, the second wife and mother of Brahma. Goddess Gayatri has a store of knowledge and hence, she is also called “Gyan-Ganga”. Initially, Goddess Gayatri was limited to only deities, but sage Vishwamitra made sure that the glory of Goddess Gayatri reaches people by performing rigorous penance.

Religious significance of Gayatri Jayanti

 The day of Gayatri Jayanti is very special, because Goddess Gayatri was born on this day. Gayatri Mata has been called the Goddess in the Atharva Veda providing strength, fame, age, life, wealth and glory. 

The creator of Mahabharata, Ved Vyas, had recited the essence of all the Vedas to Gayatri Mata. If a person prays to the Goddess with a sincere heart, then all his wishes are fulfilled. This is why on the day of Gayatri Jayanti, people try to please Goddess Gayatri wholeheartedly. Appeasing her with a devoted heart and mind is similar to respecting Kamadhenu (the divine cow who fulfills one’s desires).

 Two Big Festivals will be Celebrated on Gayatri Jayanti 

“Rakshabandhan” and “Shravan Purnima Fast” will also be celebrated this year on the auspicious day of Gayatri Jayanti. The festival of Raksha Bandhan is celebrated every year on the full Moon Tithi of the month of Shravan. On this day, a sister ties a protective coat/thread on her brother’s wrist and wishes that her brother attains longevity, and remains prosperous and happy. The Amarnath Yatra also ends on the day of Shravan Purnima. On this day, people offer water to the Shivling and Yajna, Pujan and Upanayana are performed at some places. This day is considered auspicious for obtaining some relief from Chandra Dosha and chanting, meditation, charity. Overall, Gayatri Jayanti is considered to be the best for worshiping the deities and carrying out many religious works this year.

Gayatri Mata is considered to be the wife of Brahma which is mentioned in a legend in religious texts, according to which, a very big Yagna was organized and Brahma Ji himself went to join that yagna. It is believed that if the married person is present with his wife in religious activities, then that work and worship becomes more auspicious and fruitful as they definitely turn out to be successful. But for some reason, Goddess Savitri, the wife of Brahma, was not present there at that time. Hence, Brahma ji had to join that Yagna, so he married Gayatri Mata, who was present then and there.

Mantra – ‘oṃ tatpuruṣāya vidamahe, mahādevāya dhīmahi tanno rudra: pracodayāt।’

 There is no specific way of chanting this mantra. You can start this mantra from today onwards or any Monday. Just keep in mind one thing that chanting Shiva Gayatri Mantra should be done with a concentrated mind and after lighting a lamp of Ghee in front of Lord Shiva.

Gayatri Jayanti Puja Vidhi  

  •  On this day, wake up early in the morning and bathe in a holy river, pool or pond. If this is not possible, then take a bath at home by putting Ganga Jal in the bathing water.
  • After taking a bath, wear clean clothes and take a pledge for fasting with water in your hand.
  •  On this day, worship Goddess Gayatri by following all the rites and rituals.  
  • Now recite the Gayatri Chalisa. 
  •      After this, perform a Havan by chanting the Gayatri Mantra.
  •  Also read Shri Aditya Hriday Stotra.
  • Recite Gayatri Aarti once the Puja is over.  
  •   Donating grain, jaggery and wheat on Gayatri Jayanti is considered auspicious.
  • Distribute food and sweets amongst the poor and needy ones.
