The Fasting Story For Ganga Dussehra 2023
According to mythological tales, King Bhagiratha, the forefather of Lord Rama and the king of Ayodhya, needed the waters of the Ganges to offer prayers to his ancestors and bring them peace, as well as to bring the sacred Ganga water to Ayodhya. At that time, Mother Ganga resided in heaven. King Bhagiratha undertook rigorous penance for many years in order to fulfill his goals, but he did not succeed despite his efforts. Distressed, he went to the Himalayas and engaged in intense austerity once again.
Mother Ganga, witnessing his severe penance, became extremely pleased and appeared before him to bless him. King Bhagiratha was filled with joy upon seeing Mother Ganga in front of him. Upon hearing this, Bhagiratha’s request was accepted by Mother Ganga, but the powerful flow of Ganga posed a threat of great destruction if she were to descend directly to Earth. Upon learning this, the king embarked on a dedicated penance for Lord Shiva. King Bhagiratha diligently performed rigorous penance for an entire year. Impressed by the intensity of his penance, Lord Shiva appeared before Bhagiratha, granting him a vision and accepting his request as a blessing. Subsequently, Lord Brahma directed the flow of Ganga from his kamandal (water pot), and Lord Shiva ensnared Mother Ganga in his locks.
It is believed that Mother Ganga flowed within Lord Shiva’s locks for approximately 32 days. Then, on the tenth day of the waxing phase of the month of Jyeshtha, Lord Shiva unlocked one of his locks and sent Mother Ganga down to Earth.
