Ganesh Chaturthi Significance & Pujan Vidhi

Around midday (Madhyahna), when Lord Ganesh is believed to have been born, is an auspicious time to execute the ceremony. According to Vedic astrology, it lasts from approximately 11 a.m. to 1.30 p.m., depending on where in India you are.

Every day, an “Aarti” or devotional ritual is performed in the evenings to honor the idols of Lord Ganesh. On Anant Chaturdashi, massive street processions with a cacophony of traditional drumming and crackers are held to remove and submerge the largest Ganesh idols that are on public display. However, the immersion is usually performed much earlier by those who keep an idol in their houses. One and a half, three, five, and seven days after Ganesh Chaturthi are the only days when these immersions happen. In Mumbai, where the holiday is celebrated on a large scale, many devotees choose to go see some of the most well-known Ganesh idols there.

Now read the complete Pujan Vidhi mentioned below:

  • Take a bath at Brahma Muhurta and perform your regular rituals before welcoming Ganesha into your home.
  • Lay a red seat on the post to establish the Ganesh idol that was brought home. Take a seat at the front and start the prayers.
  • Offer flowers, Durva, etc. to him after bathing Ganesha’s idol with Ganga water.
  • Offer Ganesh ji his favorite bhog, Modak, in adoration.
  • Then, do their Aarti by lighting an incense lamp, incense sticks, and fragrance. On this day, it is forbidden to observe the moon.

Anant Chaturdashi

You might be wondering why Lord Ganesh’s idol immersion ends on this day. What makes it unique? Well, Anant means immortality, endless energy, or eternal life in Sanskrit. Lord Anant, a manifestation of Lord Vishnu, is the focus of adoration on this particular day. The word “fourteenth ” is Chaturdashi. The real event takes place on the fourteenth day of the bright half of the moon in the Hindu month of Bhadrapada.

Tradition holds that on Ganesh Chaturthi, it’s vital to avoid gazing at the moon at specific times (mentioned above). According to Hindu myth, anyone who sees the moon would be afflicted with theft allegations and social disgrace unless they recite a specific mantra.

Ganesh Chaturthi Mythology

Lord Ganesha’s birth is the subject of a mythical story. Using balm and unguent, Parvati ji formed a human shape while taking a bath and gave him life. She asked him to watch the door while she took a bath. When Lord Shiva finally made it to Parvati ji after a lengthy meditation, the child stopped him at the door. The intimidation of the boy infuriated Shiva, who then beheaded the boy out of rage. The supreme Shiva afterwards learned that he was his son. In order to avoid Maa Parvati’s wrath, he orders his ganas (attendants) to bring him the head of the first living thing they come across. They discovered an elephant’s head first. The son of Shiva was given new life. The fearlessness that thus bowed to him inspired him. In Sanskrit, Ganesha or Ganpati is known as the “chief of ganas.” He is the most significant deity to worship at all festivals. Lord Ganesha is the guardian, which explains why temples and entrances contain his image.

It is stated that Lord Ganpati fulfills the desires of those who adore him. Worshiping the god is primarily done to seek forgiveness for all sins and to direct people toward the right path in life. God, according to myth, encourages us to think wisely, to keep our minds open, and to learn new things.
