Why has this Day been Named as Dussehra?

Ravana, being drowned in arrogance, abducted Mata Sita. Then, Lord Rama got furious and invited Ravana for a fight in order to get Sita free from his prison. The fight between Ravana and Lord Rama lasted for ten days. At the end, Lord Rama destroyed Ravana from Divyastra, bestowed by Maa Durga, on Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Ashwin month.

The death of Ravana is celebrated as the victory of justice over evil. Lord Rama conquered Ravana and hence, the day is known as Vijayadashami. Due to the end of ten headed Ravana, this festival is also referred to as Dashahara at certain places.

Also, Maa Durga killed Mahishasura on this very day. The demon named Mahishasura created ruckus in all three worlds i.e. heaven, earth and hell. Even, the deities were sick and tired of him and then, they went to Maa Durga. To protect deities and all three worlds, Maa Durga destroyed Mahishasura on Dashami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in Ashwin month. Being pleased with this, deities worshipped Maa Vijaya and since then, the day is known as Vijayadashami.
