Significance of Dussehra

As we have mentioned earlier, this holy festival of Dussehra is considered a symbol of victory of good over evil. So, the festival of Vijayadashami is celebrated to honor the victory of Lord Shri Ram over Lankapati Ravana. According to the Hindu Panchaang, Lord Ram killed Ravana on the tenth day of Ashwin Shukla Paksha.

According to this belief, it is said that Maa Durga fought with Mahishasura for 10 days and killed her on the tenth day of Ashwin Shukla Paksha and saved the three lokas from the terror of Mahishasura, due to which, from this day the tradition started to celebrated as Vijayadashami.
