The History Of Durga Puja
Around the 17th and 18th centuries, the wealthy and rich people used to organize the Durga Puja celebrations. It used to be the occasion where all the people gathered under one roof to worship Goddess Durga. For example, the Achala Puja is considered one of the famous celebrations in Kolkata city. The start of the celebration was done by Zamindar Laxmikant Majumdar in 1610 at 33 Rajya Nava Krishna Road, Shobha Bazar Chhoti Rajbari, Kolkata and then it finally started in 1757. He also attacked heaven and defeated Devraj Indra after gaining power and started ruling it. This got all the gods worried and reached out to Brahma, Vishnu, & Mahesh for assistance. All the Gods fought together with Mahishasura but failed. Then Trimurti created Goddess Durga to destroy Mahishasura, as no solution was reached. This power of Mother is also known as Parvati.
The fierce fight between Goddess Durga and Mahishasura took place for nine days and on the tenth day, the demon was killed. This is the reason behind celebrations of Durga Puja today and the tenth day is referred to as Vijayadashami.
