Significance of Diwali

The festival of lights, Diwali, is celebrated on the day of Amavasya during the eighth month of the Hindu Panchang i.e. the month of Kartik every year. The significance of this day lies in the facts from Hindu mythology when Lord Rama returned to his kingdom after 14 years of exile. People welcomed the Lord with a warm heart and rejoiced his return by decorating the entire kingdom and lighting Diyas/lamps.

This festival also marks the end of darkness and evil since Lord Rama returned after defeating Ravana thus it is a triumph of good over evil, Dharma over Adharma. It is believed that Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Ganesha visits Earth on the night of Diwali and blesses natives with abundance of luck and prosperity. Thus, the Diwali prayer is performed in the evening to please the God and Goddess.

The importance of this festival also lies in the fact that it is a new harvest season which signifies fertility and prosperity. Thus fruits of hard work and labour are obtained on this auspicious day. This adds to celebration.
