Diwali Mythology & Celebrations

The Return Of Lord Shree Ram Along With Mata Sita & Lakshman

The most popular one is that lord Shree Ram along with Mata Seeta and Lakshman returned to Ayodhya after completing fourteen-year exile. To welcome them back, people of Ayodhya decorated the entire city with deep mala (Diyas) to welcome Lord Rama. Since that day, Diwali is celebrated as a day of remembrance of that event.

Narakasura Was Killed by Lord Krishna

Naraksaura was the son of Bhudevi (Earth) and Varaha (one of Lord Vishnu’s Avatars). Naraksaura’s mother sought a boon from Lord Vishnu to make his son very powerful and with a long life. However, the other Gods went to Lord Vishnu to get rid of him and he assured everyone that he would do the same. Lord Vishnu killed the Asura King Naraksaura in Krishna Avatar and freed 16000 women from his captivity. Naraksaura also had a boon that his death would be a festive celebration. Thus, the day of his death came to be celebrated as Diwali.

Origin of Goddess Lakshmi From Samundra Manthan

We all worship Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali but hardly know the reason behind it. So for that we find the answer in the story of Samundra Manthan during the  churning of Sheer Sager by Devas and Asuras. Goddess Lakshmi emerged from the Sheer Sager on the day of Diwali seated on a Lotus flower. She chose Lord Vishnu as her eternal consort and blessed the entire world with prosperity, wealth, and luxury.

Diwali as Bandi Chhor Divas

Diwali is celebrated by the Sikh community as Bandi Chhor Diwas, which translates to Prisoner Release Day. On this day, Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, the sixth Guru, was freed from imprisonment and returned back in 1619. He arrived back to his followers during the time of Diwali and this day has been celebrated as a National Holiday in India ever since.

Diwali as Nirvana

On this very day, the twenty-fourth and last Jain Tirthankara of the present cosmic age, Mahavira, attained Nirvana or Moksha. Mahavira was regarded as the man who gave Jainism its present form. Moksha means liberation of the soul. Attaining Moksha should be the prime objective of every soul on this planet, according to Jainism. A liberated soul is said to have attained its true and fundamental nature of infinite happiness, infinite knowledge, and infinite perception. The main objective of all his teachings was how to be free from the continuous cycle of birth, life, and death and achieve a permanently blissful state. He also envisioned men and women to be on equal footing in the matters of spiritual advancement.
