The name “Devutthana” comes from the awakening of the Gods. It is believed that Lord Vishnu falls into a deep sleep on the Ekadashi of Ashad Shukla Paksha and wakes up four months later on the Ekadashi of Kartik Shukla Paksha. Due to these four months being a period of rest for the Gods, every Manglik program is prohibited. The Manglik rituals are performed after the Gods have woken up.

There is a special significance of observing a fast on this day. It is believed that the one who observes this fast is blessed with the results of a thousand Ashwamegha Yagya and a hundred Rajasuya Yagya. According to the mythical beliefs, the tradition of Tulsi Vivah on this day is considered to bring positivity into your household. There are many festivals organized for the wedding of Goddess Tulsi on Devutthana Ekadashi.

The Significance of the Tulsi Vivah

There is a special importance of the Tulsi Vivah on the day of Devutthana Ekadashi. On this day, the Tulsi plant is married off to Shaligram in a traditional wedding ceremony. Since Tulsi is Lord Vishnu’s beloved plant, the first prayer that Lord Vishnu hears after waking up is of Goddess Tulsi. The simple meaning of Tulsi Vivah is to evoke the Gods through Tulsi. It is believed that if someone does not have a daughter, they should perform the rituals of Tulsi Vivah to be blessed with the honor of Kanyadaan.

The Mythical Tales

According to the mythological tale, once upon a time, Goddess Lakshmi inquired of Lord Vishnu saying, “Oh lord, either you stay awake for days and nights on a stretch or you fall into deep sleep (Yoga Nidra) for centuries. This causes many problems to every creature of the world. I request you to sleep according to a set rule or a specific time so that I would get some rest as well.” Lord Vishnu was impressed with Goddess Lakshmi’s request and agreed to it.

Lord Vishnu replied to Goddess Lakshmi, “On your request, I will rest for four months of the Monsoon season. This sleep of mine will be called “Alpanidra” and “Pralay Kaalin Mahaanidra” and those devotees who will serve me during this time will receive desired results. Whoever will worship me with utmost love and complete rituals, I will reside with them in their house.”
