Auspicious Events are Prohibited during Chaturmas

When Lord Vishnu sleeps, all kinds of auspicious activities such as marriages, Mundan Sanskar, Janeu, Graha Parvesh are not recommended to take place and therefore, everyone waits for Lord Vishnu to wake up, and thereafter, good events begin to take place with his grace. However, the period of 4 months may be a blink of an eye for Lord Vishnu him but it matters much for us.

Although the period of four months is a long duration and in present times, people may question why this period is so long. It can be understood through a logic that like a day appears to be very small for us, at the same time there are some other creatures who only remain alive for a day or they have a life for a short duration. Also, there are animals who have a life span of a maximum of 10 years. Therefore, the life span of different creatures varies.

Puranic Legend associated with the Slumber of Lord Vishnu

There is a Puranic legend related to Lord Vishnu’s slumber that there was a king named Bali, who was arrogant because of his donations. To kill his egoistic instinct, Lord Vishnu took the form of a dwarf (Vamana form) and demanded three steps of land as a donation and Kind Bali granted it. But Lord Vishnu then measured the entire land with two steps and asked him where he should put the third step to which King Bali offered his head and surrendered himself to Lord Vishnu.

After being pleased, Lord Vishnu went to Patal Lok with him according to his boon. After this, Maa Lakshmi adopted Bali King as her brother and tied Raksha Sutra on his wrist, and brought Lord Vishnu back with her. Therefore, there is a belief that Lord Vishnu goes to sleep during these 4 months in Patal Lok owing to which, auspicious activities are stopped.
