Importance of Dev Diwali On Kartik Purnima

The Kartik Purnima holds great importance in Sanatan Dharma because Kartik Purnima is associated with all the three lords- Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva.

According to the beliefs, it is said this is the day when Lord Shiva killed the demon Tripurasur and because of this, Devtas celebrated Diwali by lighting Diyas/lamps in heaven. Since then, the tradition of celebrating Dev Diwali is observed in Varanasi and the Ghats come alive with thousands of Diyas/lamps. It is believed that all deities descend on earth to welcome Lord Shiva.

For Vaishnava followers, the utmost importance is attached to Kartik Month, and giving donations on Kartik Purnima is considered to be highly auspicious. The festival of Tulasi Vivah which begins on the day of Dev Uthani Ekadashi comes ahead of the day of Kartik Purnima. As per Puranas, Tulsi Vivah can be performed on any day between Dev Utthani Ekadashi to Kartik Purnima and many people choose the day of Kartik Purnima to perform the marriage of Goddess Tulsi and Lord Shaligram, an iconic representation of Lord Vishnu.

It is said that on this day Pushkar Sarovar of Brahma Ji came to earth in Pushkar, Rajasthan. Pushkar Mela starts on Dev Utthani Ekadashi and continues till Kartik Purnima. This fair is held in honour of Lord Brahma whose temple is situated in Pushkar. Taking a spiritual bath in Pushkar lake on Kartik Purnima is considered fruitful.

By lighting lamps/Diyas on this day, the souls of our ancestors get peace, due to this very reason offering for the ancestors is recommended. By having a spiritual and religious bath in Ganga or any other holy river, one attains salvation with the blessing of Lord Vishnu according to our scriptures.

A lampstand of Ghee or sesame seed oil is advised during the evening time as it proves extremely favourable. One must light a Diya/lamp in front of Lord Shiva to ward off all sufferings of life. ·       One must wake up before sunrise and take a bath in the Ganga river. If that is not possible, you can add some drops of Gangajal to your bathing water. By doing so, it is believed that all the past sins of life are washed off.

·       Conducting Satyanarayan Puja and Katha proves beneficial, and a person enjoys peace of mind.

·       Lighting up Diyas/lamps in front of the Tulsi plant proves fruitful.

·       Light Diyas/lamps for the peace of the souls of ancestors as well.

·       Offering Diyas facing the east direction helps in attaining the blessings of God, native gets a long and healthy life. Also, there remains peace and prosperity in the family. 

·       Offering water to the Moon in a silver vessel during nighttime will strengthen the position of the Moon in your chart.

·       Donations of articles like clothes, food, Puja Samagri, Diyas will bring good luck because you never know which incarnation of Devta will shower their blessings on you.

·       Place mango leaf Bandarban on the main door of your house.

·       It is advised to stay away from anger and brutality on this day.
