Third Day of Chhath Puja: Sandhya Arghya

On the third day of this festival, the Prasad is prepared and Sandhya Arghya is offered to Lord Sun. After this, on the fourth day of Chhath Puja, i.e. the day of Saptami, Arghya is again offered to Usha, the wife of Lord Sun, and worship is performed and this marks the end of Chhath Puja on this very day.

Fourth Day of Chhath Puja: Usha Arghya

The last day of Chhath Puja i.e. the fourth day is dedicated to Usha, the wife of Lord Sun. This day is also known by Parana as after offering water to the rising Sun on this very day, the fast comes to an end. On this day, the devotees gather at the bank of the river, dance, and sing-songs, and wait for the sunrise and when it rises, Arghya is offered. After this, the fasters distribute the Prasad and seek the blessings of their elders.    

After having the blessings of their elders, the fasters return home and break a long 36 hours Nirjala fast with ginger and water. After breaking the fast, they enjoy sumptuous food, and with this ends the Chhath Puja.

Chhath Puja: Legend/Katha

As per the legend/Katha of Chhath Puja, Raja Priyavrat had no child, as a result, he would always remain worried and unhappy. Once, Maharishi Kashyap suggested Raja to perform Yagya to be blessed with a child. Agreeing to the advice of the Maharaja, the Yagya was performed, and thus, he was blessed with a child but it was born as dead.    

On this, king, queen, and others went deep into sorrow. All of a sudden, Maa Shashthi appeared in the sky, and the king prayed to her and she introduced herself as the daughter of Brahma and takes care of the children on the earth, and grants children to the childless.   

After this, Devi showers her blessings on the dead child, and all of a sudden, he started breathing. Seeing this, the king got pleased and started worshipping Devi Shashthi. It is believed that the tradition of worshipping Maa Chhathi started from there onwards.

  • Refrain from the use of onion and garlic during the 4 days of Chhath Puja. 
  • Special attention is paid to cleanliness during this period. Don’t spread garbage and do not touch anything with dirty hands. 
  • Do not eat anything while preparing Prasad. 
  • The fasters should eat anything only after offering Arghya to the Sun. It is considered to be inauspicious to consume even a drop of water before offering Arghya.
