When is Chhath Puja Celebrated?

The festival of venerating Lord Sun is celebrated twice in a year. Firstly, Chaitra Shukla Shashti, known by the name of Chaiti Chhath, and Secondly, Kartik Shukla Shashti, known by the name of Chhath Puja. The Chhath celebrated on Kartik Shukla Shashti is highly known across the country. 

People celebrate this Chhath mainly and it lasts for 4 days. The festival of Chhath is known by many names like Chhath Puja, Dala Chhath, Chhath Maiya, Chhath, Surya Shashthi Puja etc.

Why is Chhath Puja Performed?

Performing Chhath Puja or observing the fast of Lord Sun has different purposes. Mainly, Chhath Puja or the worship of Lord Sun is performed for peace, prosperity and happiness of the family. It is believed that one who worships Lord Sun, remains healthy forever.

Who is Devi Chatthi and How did She Originate?

Chhath Maiya has been given the status of Lord Sun’s sister. However, as per the legend of Chhath Vrat, Chhath Devi is considered to be Devasena, the daughter of God. Devasena starts introducing herself by saying that she was born from the sixth element of nature and therefore, she is known as Shashti/Chattha i.e. Six.

In addition to this, Devi Chatthi says that if any couple desires to be blessed with a child, they must worship her with due rituals. A person must be blessed with a child owing to performing the same. Therefore, the tradition of worshipping on Kartik Shukla Shashti has been defined. In mythology, it is said about Chhath Vrat that Lord Shri Ram after returning from Ayodhya, worshipped Lord Sun on Kartik Shukla Shashti along with Maa Sita during the Ramayana period. 

Besides this, during the Mahabharata period, the legend regarding the attainment of a son by worshiping Lord Sun before marriage by Maa Kunti is also taken into consideration. Unmarried Kunti after giving birth to Karna, who was originated from the rituals of Lord Sun, gave him away in a running stream of river. It is believed that he was also the worshipper of Lord Sun. Even today, people venerate Lord Sun on Kartik Shukla Shashti to get its grace. 

Karna used to venerate Lord Sun by dipping in water and therefore, he always remained under his immense grace.

How to Celebrate the Festival of Chhath? 

This festival of Chhath lasts for 4 days. The first day of Chhath begins with Nahay Khay. Although the festival of Chhath is celebrated on Kartik Shukla Shashti but its celebration begins from Kartik Shukla Chaturthi with Nahay Khay. It is believed about this day that  the observer of the fast wears new clothes after taking a bath and eats vegetarian food. Other members of the family can have food only after the observer of the fast eats.    

After this, Kharna is celebrated on the second day of Chhath Puja. The fast is observed throughout the day of Kartik Shukla Panchami and the observers take food in the evening. This day is also known by the name of Kharna. People worship without consuming and eating anything on this very day. After this, people prepare Kheer of rice and jaggery in the evening. The use of salt and sugar is strictly avoided on this very day. Besides this, Pitha of rice and Roti with some Ghee on it are prepared and distributed  the same among others as Prasad.          

Chhath Puja is celebrated on the day of Shashti. Prasad is prepared on the same day. Thekua is the main Prasad of Chhath Puja. It is also known as Tikari in some places.  Ladoos of rice are also made on this very day. After this, prepared Prasad and fruits are  decorated on a bamboo basket. All the fast observers go to ponds, rivers, Ghats to offer water to the Sun and venerate while taking a bath.      

After this, the practice of offering water, taking a bath and worshipping Lord Sun is repeated on the fourth day of Chhath Puja i.e Saptami at the time of sunrise. After this,  Prasad is distributed among others after worshipping with due rituals and then worship of Chhath gets completed.

Chhath Puja as Per Astrology

As per astrology, pleasing Chhathi Maiya is considered to be extremely important and easy. The tradition of worshipping Chhathi Maiya with due rituals has not only been defined to please her but also things are carefully used in the worship.
